Why you should visit the Basque Country

I have to say, now sitting back in my apartment in Florence that I can’t help but think there is something really mysterious this place. The feeling I had when walking around and taking in the sites was that this was a country of contrasts and secrets, landscapes included. To us, the locals were very friendly and warm, and I never rushed into speaking English but instead memorized a few key French phrases (however terrible my pronunciation is). These are a proud people, completely in tune with their heritage and eager to share that with you.

I really couldn’t believe how pretty this city is ā€“ it’s the epitome of fantastic food, nice beaches and interesting architecture. I am very intrigued by the Basque culture in general and welcome opportunity to spend more time in this region in the future.

Why you should visit the Basque country (part one)

Part of of our France adventures involved a 4 day foray into the Basque country (Euskal Herria).Ā To be honest I have only heard of this region recently but yet there was something about it that made me really want to see this part of Europe. The Basque itself is comprised of the area around the western Pyrenees and encompesses both France and Spain along the Atlantic coastline. According to wikipedia:

Why you should visit the Basque Country (coast ā€“ partĀ two)

The french pays basque coastline is quite small so we were able to move around quite easily in our car though traffic was definitely a pain. Our first stop was the elegant stomping ground/ surfers paradise of Biarritz. Along the Atlantic coastline and on the Bay of Biscay, we found more than enough to keep us occupied for a day or two and it quite honestly exceeded our expectations as a travel destination. I was originally going to include both towns in this blog post but I decided they each deserve their own.

Why you should visit the Basque Country (coast ā€“ part three)

A trip to the CĆ“te BasqueĀ would not be complete without a visit to the beautiful port city of Saint Jean de Luz, named after St. John the Baptist and just a few kilometers from Spain. Itā€™sĀ wealth stems from its port and its past, with the town being associated with either fishing or from the capture of vessels by its own Basque corsaires, or pirates. We had heard that this was a gem not to be missed so we spent a few afternoons here. Because it was August the center was crowded with people and live music radiated from the central piazza close to the port, we found this village to be no sleepy town.

Why you should visit the Basque Country (SanĀ Sebastian)

Our last day of adventures in the Basque led us to San Sebastian or Donostia (in Basque language) which is located near the Bay of Biscay and near the French border ā€“ with threeĀ famousĀ beachesĀ Concha, Ondaretta, and Zurriola. We decided to park our car in Hendaye and take the Euska train to San Sebastian since we didnā€™t want to worry about parking and we wanted to focus on the important things while traveling, stuffing our faces and getting into trouble.
