El gran impacto de la Cultura vasca en un etnomusicólogo norteamericano

Se llama Jacob Dealm, es etnomusicólogo (experto en le estudio de la cultura y la música), y en estos momentos está haciendo el doctorado en Composición Musical en la Eastern Washington University.

En su artículo en Global Citizen Daily, nos cuenta su experiencia en el País Vasco conociendo, estudiando y empapándose de cultura, historia, tradición y musical vasca. pensamos que su último párrafo resume muy bien lo que ha sentido y ha aprendido de su estancia entre los vascos:

The Basque culture is beautiful. I am happy that it has survived so long and that I had the opportunity to meet those wonderful people. Because of them and what they taught me, I will always take with me the value of tradition. (La cultura vasca es hermosa. Estoy feliz de que haya sobrevivido tanto tiempo y que tuviese la oportunidad de conocer a esa gente maravillosa. Sólo podemos poner una pega a su artículo. Y es la referencia escogida de Wikipedia para definir Basque Country. Creemos que, dado que habla de cultura y música vasca, habria estado mucho mejor haber usado esta entrada que define El País de los Vascos en toda su extensión.

Basking in the Basque Country

Two months prior to the summer of 2012 I was informed that my internship in Asia fell through. For my bachelor degree in Ethnomusicology I was required to do my internship in a foreign country and I had two months to find an internship. Panicked, I accepted the first offer that came my way: the Basque Country in Northern Spain. I didn’t have a clue who the Basques were, but I was desperate for an internship, so I accepted.  I was then sent to a small town outside London where I met my “team.” There, we trained and studied together for our assignment: to lead a song writing workshop for a local Church. In England, my team began to study Basque music and history to better understand who we were interacting with. But there was nothing that could prepare us enough for the trip ahead of us. After two weeks in England we set off for the Basque Country.
