¿Los lobos no son tan listos como parecía?

Tenemos que reconocer que tenemos una gran querencia por los lobos. Puede que debido a que somos miembros de la generación Fauna Ibérica de Félix Rodriguez de la Fuente. Por eso, la información aparecida en la varias webs científicas, de que los lobos no son tan listos como parecía, nos ha dejado entre incrédulos y tristes.

No es que pongamos en duda los resultados del estudio. Es que, simplemente, si sus conclusiones fueran acertadas, no nos gustan nada. Da la impresión de que los lobos no son buenos cazadores gracias a una complicada estructura social de la manada, y a un adecuado trabajo cooperativo en la caza.

Todas estas dudas saltan al leer la información sobre el estudio dirigido por Cristina Muro, de la Asociación de Perros de Asistencia AEPA-Euskadi,  y en el que han participado Ramón Escobedo, compañero de asociación y miembro Departamento de Matemática Aplicada y Ciencias de la Computación, Universidad de Cantabria, así como L. Spector y R.P. Coppinger, de la School of Cognitive Science, del Hampshire College (USA).

La conclusión es que, en un sistema de simulación por computador, los lobos virtuales, consiguen idénticos resultados que los lobos reales, aplicándoles dos sencillas reglas: Mantenerse cerca, pero fuera del alcance de las defensas de la presa y a ser posible dejar que otro lobo sea el que se arriesgue.

Como apuntábamos antes, no decimos que no sean correctas las conclusiones. Pero tenemos que reconocer que nos gusta más la imagen de los lobos de Fauna Ibérica que la que nos ofrecen esos lobos por computador.

Wolf-pack (Canis lupus) hunting strategies emerge from simple rules in computational simulations

We have produced computational simulations of multi-agent systems in which wolf agents chase prey agents. We show that two simple decentralized rules controlling the movement of each wolf are enough to reproduce the main features of the wolf-pack hunting behavior: tracking the prey, carrying out the pursuit, and encircling the prey until it stops moving.
