Five experts on international conflict resolution have joined forces to help Spain’s troubled Basque region to move towards peace, representatives of the group said Tuesday. Spanish government wants to ban new Basque separatist party
The Spanish government said Thursday it was seeking a legal ban on Sortu, a new Basque separatist party suspected of being controlled by the armed group ETA. Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero’s government tasked lawyers representing the state to appeal to the Supreme Court, a government official told the television station Telemadrid. (sigue)

Spain challenges new Basque pro-independence party
Spain’s attorney general says a new Basque independence party is a repackaged version of the armed group ETA’s banned political wing Batasuna and he will ask judges to deny the party legal status. It is up to a special section of the Supreme Court to decide on legalizing the new party called Sortu, which unveiled its charter last week and insists it rejects ETA violence. (sigue)
