The English-language version of the National Geographic website just published its top 25 recommended destinations win the world for 2021, once we’re able to move about freely again.

These destinations were chosen by the publication’s travel editors, and are grouped into five categories: Adventure, Culture and History, Nature, Family, and Sustainability.  The publication itself explains that “these superlative destinations speak of resilient communities, innovative conservation efforts, and thrilling opportunities for future explorations”.

Among these world marvels, we find Vitoria-Gasteiz in the “Culture and History” category, sharing this list with six other European destinations.

Over the years, we’ve collected several international references to the Basque capital city, along with many reference to the Rioja alavesa, a hugely interesting destination for lovers of good wine and good food.  But we always get the feeling that this part of our country still has a lot of groth to do in terms of tourism, always, of course, without losing its essence or turning into a “theme park”.

We’re a small and fascinating country.  Our international visitors are used to traveling great distances every day to commute from home to work.  We have to be able to see our country as a whole, especially if we want the high quality kind of tourism that spends a great deal of time with us.

We’ll leave you with the National Geographic article including Vitoria-Gasteiz on that list of up-and-coming places to visit in 2021.  We’ll also leave you with an article in the Spanish-language edition of this magazine where Javier Zori del Amo explains the reasons behind why the capital of the Basque Autonomous Community was included on the list.
