A ‘Geo’ (France) special on the Basque Country, or when life gives you small (big) pleasures

This past May, the French edition of Geo magazine included an incredible, 44-page report titled “Le Pays basque. Une évasion sans frontières” (The Basque Country: A Getaway without Borders).

The title already gives us a clue as to why this Geo special made our day so.  In their travels from Bayonne to Bilbao, from Cambo-les-Bains to Vitoria (via Ituren and Zubieta), the author, Cyril Guinet, talks to us about a single country, without any borders to differentiate it.  What’s more, in the texts, they use the terms Basque Country and Euskadi to talk about everywhere they visit, regardless of which side of the Pyrenees they’re on.

To those who might find this strange, we’d just like to comment that this term is more and more used by French media to also refer to the Northern Basque Country (what some call the “French Basque Country”).  And this is no passing fad or indeed anything new.  Way back in 1936, French director René Le Hénaff used the term “Euskadi” in a film he made using 3-D techniques.  We’ve written about it on the blog.

These are 12 articles that offer us a kaleidoscope of everything Basque, a special that brings us the traditional Carnival of the Baztan Valley, the tourist attractions of the Basque Coast, the ancient symbol Guernica, and a San Sebastian that is more than just a tourist destination.

We’re not sure why (note the irony), but we believe this special will never see the light of day in the Spanish edition of this magazine.  Just do a little experiment: search for ‘País Vasco‘ in the Spanish edition’s website, and then look up ‘Pays Basque’ in the French version’s.  No comment.
