Our regular readers know how hugely interested we are in everything related to the Basque Diaspora.  This interest goes far beyond what could be considered the original purpose of this blog: to collect articles and reports about the Basques published internationally.  Over the years, we’ve created an enormous collection of articles on the presence, history, activities, and footprints of the Basques in the world.

It’s easy to understand, then, why we’re so happy to hear that a new post-graduate program about the Basque Diaspora has been started by the University of the Basque Country, in collaboration with the Directorate of the Basque Community Abroad (Secretary General of Activity Abroad at the Basque Government).

We also believe it’s a very well-structured program, as it offers a quality academic education open to all interested students, not just specialists or academicians, on a topic that is so important for our nation.

It’s also designed to be accessible by the whole global Basque community, and to everyone interested in everything Basque, thanks to its “virtual classes” format.

These are its main characteristics:

The course is clearly designed as an international and inter-university program.  It will be a mixed course, both online and in person, between September 2021 and May 2022.

It’s structured in two levels, which can be completed progressively over the academic year.  These education levels are “Expert” (the more basic level), which can be studied by anyone interested, with a value of 18 credits, and “Specialist” (the upper level), which is open to university graduates and has a value of 30 credits.

As for the contents, the program covers three knowledge areas related to the Basque Diaspora:

  • Firstly, a multi-disciplinary overview of the History, Economics, Culture, and Communication areas (especially the internet and social media), among others;
  • Secondly, a specific focus on the Basque Diaspora;
  • Thirdly, an introduction to research, which will lead to the writing of a thesis (only required to obtain the title of “Specialist”).

Online pre-registration for this post-graduate program will be available starting May 3, 2021.  The program is organized by the Directorate for the Basque Community Abroad (Secretary General of Activities Abroad of the Basque Government) and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), and the teaching staff will include academicians and professionals from different universities.

More information about this program can be found on the Basque Government’s website.
