The Government of Wales has, in a press release on their website, defined the Basque Country as a “priority partner” in a memorandum of understanding bother governments signed in 2018.

This excellent relationship between the Basques and the Welsh stretched back a long, long time, and we’ve brought you a few examples over the years: medieval trade between the two countries; sharing of knowledge regarding cooperativism and innovation; taking in Basque War Children; Welsh captains breaking the rebel blockade to bring food to Bilbao… There are many, many things that tie us together, and it would seem that Brexit will neither break nor even weaken these historic connections.

The Welsh Government has highlighted this assessment of the Basque Autonomous Community as a priority partner in its International Strategy when it announced its virtual trade mission from March 1–12.

The ten participating countries, from the life sciences and health sectors, are looking to establish contacts, exchange knowledge, and develop trade and collaborative relationships with a wide variety of potential partners and customers in the Basque Country.

The release highlights the fact that the Basques have a solid industrial base and are focused on science and innovation, making them a key partner for Wales.  It also recalls the intense trade relationships and knowledge exchange that takes place between both countries.

Among the participants are companies that receive support from a new pilot initiative to group together life sciences exports, whose goal is to bring companies together to share best practices and promote exports in the sector; that is, they’re setting up a new structure that’s very similar to Basque clusters.

This is an initiative we hope brings excellent returns to both sides.
