Today, four Basque institutions with deep roots in the history of the Country have signed an institutional declaration in which they commit to continuing their support to an institution, Eusko Ikaskuntza, which turns 100 this year.
The four Provincial Governments of the Southern Basque Country organized a Basque Studies Congress in 1918 in Oñati. Everyone who worked for “the restoration of the personality of the Country and for the intensification of culture as an indispensable condition for achieving that goal” was welcome. In that historic encounter Eusko Ikaskuntza – The Society of Basque Studies was born.
Almost 100 years later, one of the first acts commemorating the centenary of this leading tool in the defense of the personality of our Country, its collective progress, science, and culture was held.
The natural heirs of those institutions, the Governments of Biscay, Alava, Gipuzkoa, and Navarre, have signed an Institution Declaration renewing that commitment.
We’d like to join in on the celebration of these commemorations, which we’ll follow closely. We can’t forget that Eusko Ikaskuntza, along with the Royal Basque Language Academy, Euskaltzaindia, is one of the only two unique institutions that are officially recognized throughout the entirety of our country, on both sides of the Pyrenees.
We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank two projects that are extraordinarily useful for this blog: Euskonews and the Auñamendi Encyclopedia. Both sources of information are true gems, where the role of Basques in the world in preeminent.
