Just one of those little coincidences in life.  On December 4, 2011, the Mexican daily El Informador published the statements made by Fernando Aramburu, in which he insulted Bernardo Atxaga, and in which he said that writers in Basque “are no more than literary hitmen” and that they don’t write about the terrible consequences of ETA terrorism because they’re afraid.  That same day, the same periodical published an interview with Basque-language author Anjel Lertxundi, in which he proved that the reality was quite different.

We can’t imagine the confusion of a reader of this paper, seeing, on the one hand, a prize-winning author saying what he said about Basque-language authors, and then on another page, in such clear and unbiased terms, the statements of a Basque-language author who has also won the Spanish National Essay Prize for his work “Vida y otras dudas (Life and other questions)”.

That’s what happens when one doesn’t tell the truth, or tries to make reality seem like what Mr. Aramburu’s political protectors want it to look like.  Our amama told us, “it’s easier to catch a liar than a lame person”.  It’s so obvious, after reading both articles, where dignity lies, and where it shines because of its absence.
