The Limako Arantzazu Euzko Etxea of Lima and the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Aranzazu of Lima are known for being very active on social media, and we’ve collaborated with them from time to time on matters we found to be of great interest.

The pandemic that has spread all over the world has again brought us together to collaborate.  They were convinced that a reminder was needed of the citizen collaboration and solidarity that Basques are so well known for all over the world.

So, based on an iconic, almost mythical, poster the Basque Resistance shared in the dark years of the dictatorship, a new poster has been created which has a clear message aimed at all Basques, be they in the homeland or abroad, and which has received over 100,000 hits on Facebook in the first 48 hours.

The historical “Euzkadik bear zaitu” has become “Jendeak bear zaitu“: “People need you”.  It harks back to the idea Lehendakari Aguirre transmitted to the Diaspora basques in the 1950s, and which is just as valid today:

“Basques must, in their adopted homeland, be, among all citizens, the best.”
“The Basque Centers around the world are the representation of our Country”

The complete text of the poster:

Jendeak behar zaitu — People need you

Many years ago, during the long night of Francoism, the Basque Resistance created a poster that became an icon. Its slogan was “Euzkadi bear zaitu” (The Basque Country needs you). Now, all over the world, COVID-19 is becoming a tough enemy that is striking us all, but hitting the weakest especially hard. During this battle, we Basques all over the world have to prove our commitment to society and our solidarity, following the principles which guided our forebears, which Lehendakari Aguirre summed up so well in that phrase aimed at all of our compatriots: “Basques must, in their adopted homeland, be, among all citizens, the best.” Let’s fulfill our destiny.

“Basques must, in their adopted homeland, be, among all citizens, the best.”
“The Basque Centers around the world are the representation of our Country”
—José Antonio de Aguirre, Lehendakari.

“Because they were, we are; because we are, they will be.
The chain shall not be broken!”
