Askotan hitz egin izan dugu, gaur egun Kanada den Iparamerikako atlantiko kostan euskaldunok utzitako aztarnari buruz. XVI.mendeko hasieratik, euskal arrantzale eta bale ehiztariak zeuden bai Terranovan eta baita Labradoren, nortzuk herrialde hartako historiaren parte garrantzitsu den aztarna utzi zuten.
Terranova irlan dagoeneko aipatu dugun herrialde bat dago: Placentia. Orain dela 5 mende, bertara urtero zihoazen euskal itsasgizonek, bale ehiztariek jarritako izena. Era berean mantentzen dira bertan hildako euskal itsasgizonen hilarriak. Domingo de Luca euskalduna, autorea, 1563an “nire gorpua Plazentia portu honetan, hemen hiltzen direnak lurperatzen diren leku berean lurpera daitela” adierazi zuen bere testamentuan.
