Just as we announced a month ago finally came true today: Pope Francis has named Martín Fulgencio Elorza Legaristi, also known as Monsignor Elorza, the Basque Passionist missionary in the Peruvian Amazon and Bishop of Moyobamba, as “Venerable of the Church”, which is a fundamental step on the way to his canonization.
Regardless of whether or not you’re a Catholic, to recognize this Basque missionary is to recognize all the work the Basque Passionists have done in the Peruvian Amazon. Moreover, it is also to recognize the work that so many Basques have carried out during missionary work all over the world. As we’ve commented before, they are a fundamental part of the Basque diaspora. All members of the diaspora have many things in common, but these members stand out in one very important way: while most left the Basque Country in search of a better life, Basque missionaries left their homeland in order to build a better life for others.
Today. thanks to the hard work of Father Artola C.P.. is a good day for the Passionists, for Basque Passionists, and for the Basques who know the amazing work these compatriots have carried out around the world.
This is the press release the Catholic Church issued from Rome, which is also presented on the website of the Passionist Congregation.
