Comparándose con Bilbao desde Kansas City

Anne Foster ha nacido y vive en la ciudad norteamericana de Kansas City. Le encanta viajar y tiene un blog en el que escribe sus experiencias personales. En ese blog ha dedicado dos pequeñas entradas a comparar, y puntuar, su ciudad de residencia con Bilbao, usando dos aspectos concretos: dos puentes y dos museos.

Los comparativa de puentes centrar la primera entrada: el Puente Transbordador de Portugalete, situado en la desembocadura del Ibaizabal, y el ASB bridge , que realmente ofrece una solución de ingeniería imaginativa, y que cruza sobre el rio Missouri. La segunda se centra en los dos museos. En concreto el Nelson Atkins Museum of Art de su ciudad y el Museo Guggenheim de Bilbao.

Mientras que la primera comparativa nos parece adecuada por características y época de los elementos comparados, creemos que la comparativa de los dos museos ha quedado un poco descentrada. Sin duda dadas las especiales características del museo de Kansas City, hubiera sido mucho mejor que la comparativa se hubiera realizado con el binomio Bellas Artes de Bilbao- Guggenheim. Ya que eso si igualaría las características de edady de colección entre los principales museos de ambas ciudades.

Si bien es verdad que el resultado final de la comparación habría quedado muy parecido. Es muy difícil ganar a un museo que, como el Nelson Atkins, tiene el acceso libre de pago. O si lo prefieren, gratis.

Things that Bilbao and Kansas City have in common: part 1

Kansas City: The ASB bridge crosses the Missouri River connecting the two halves of Kansas City.  When this bridge opened in 1911 it allowed for train traffic on the lower level and car traffic on top.  A pulley system would lift the south part of the bridge to let barges through.  When the bridge was lifted, train traffic was stopped but car traffic could continue as normal.  This feature makes it the the only bridge of its kind in the United States.  In 1987, the department of transportation opened a new bridge to the east and closed traffic on the upper level of the ASB bridge.  Twenty-six years later, I am still disappointed about this.

The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art is the long time pride and joy of Kansas City. The original Beaux Art building opened in 1933 with a modest collection of work that has grown significantly over the years. The permanent collection now includes plenty of impressive works ranging from Egyptian artifacts to modern work by Georgia O’Keefe. But what really makes the Nelson unique is its new Block Building that opened in 2007. The modern addition houses contemporary art and special exhibitions. But the cool part: the building lights up at night.
