A few weeks ago, we reported on the beginnings of the 2022 edition of the Day of the Basque Diaspora, an event we have had maximum interest in since it was first suggested at the end of 2017.

Yesterday, the General Secretary for Foreign Events at the Basque Government, Marian Elorza; the Delegate Councilman for Cross-Border, European, and International Cooperation for the Agglomerated Community of the Basque Country, Joseba Erremundeguy; and the Mayor of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, Laurent Inchauspé introduced the even that will be held in that town.

From our point of view, this year’s celebration will be accompanied by several extra “bits of joy.”

  • The first is that we’re back to a format that is open to everyone who wants to come.  It’s a pleasure to see a return to normality after all the restrictions we were under during the pandemic.  We ourselves will be present at the celebration.
  • The second is that it’s being held north of the Pyrenees, in the Northern Basque Country.  Moreover, it’s to be held in a town as symbolic as Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.  It’s symbolic because it’s part of Navarre, part of the Northern Basque Country, and also a key stop on the Camino de Santiago, the route that has so helped to create a common European conscience.
  • The third is that at the event, both Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu Renteria and the President of the Community of the Agglomeration of the Northern Basque Country, Jean-René Etchegaray, will be taking part.  This is huge news, and an important step forward in the inter-institutional collaboration before the global Basque community. The Basques of the diaspora have a shared awareness of belonging to the Basque community regardless of the place of origin of their ancestors.  We hope there will be representation of institution from all the places of origin around the world of the people who feel Basque.

We’re sure it’s going to be a great day, both for Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, where the official event will be held at 6:00 pm on September 8, CET, and for Basques all around the world, who can “stop” for a moment, reflect, and celebrate being a part of such a rich and enthralling cultural, social, and human reality as the Basques’.
