Se está preparando un documental sobre la historia del Jai Alai en USA. La noticia nos ha parecido extraordinaria. Nos hemos enterado a través de la web de uno del New England Basque Club, uno de los centros vascos empeñados en mantener y avivar, la llama de lo Vasco en los USA.

No sabemos mucho mas de lo que pone en la información de este adelanto del documental. Pero la verdad es que parece que va a ser un gran trabajo. Nuestra admirada  Henar Chico, en su blog “a Basque in Boise” nos ofrece una amplia información sobre este proyecto y su responsable. This video is part of an ongoing project to document the story of Jai Alai in the United States, a sport originated at the end of 19th century in the Basque Country that arrived to Florida via Cuba and Mexico after experiencing initial glory in Latin America and Eastern Asia.  From the 50’s to the 80’s, in its North American ‘incarnation’ and being played by Basque globetrotters, this sport billed as the world’s fastest ball game experienced its peak. Never before, did Jai Alai reach greater popularity than it did in the states of Florida, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Nevada.

Growing up in the Basque Country I was always more concerned with soccer than going to the fronton. Even if I went, I wouldn’t have seen anything other than handball matches anyway. In 1996 I moved to the US and in 2008 – after being almost entirely detached for a few years from anything Basque– I started playing pala in Boise’s fronton. So, whether in Boise or Bilbao, I never really gave that much thought to the game of Jai Alai.
