J.C Reid 2013ko lehen egunetan ezagutu genuen, bere blogean argitaratutako Bilbori buruzko artikulu bikain bati esker. Orain berriz aurkitu gara elkar, Beaumont-eko arkituektu honek Donostiari buruzko artikulu serie bikain bat argitaratzen hasi delako, zeinek 10 emanaldi izango dituen.

Artikulu serie honen sarrera bezala, blogean bere irakurleei abentura honetan sartzearen arrazoiak azaltzeko sarrera bat idatzi du, abentura seriea osatzen duten 8.000 hitzetatik haratago doala adieraziz.

Sarrera hau, The San Sebastián Chronicles izenburua duena, herrialde batenganako eta honen kultura, gastronomía eta jendearenganako pasio eta maitasun adierazpen bat iruditu zaigu. Beretzat ezezaguna zer herrialde baten aurkikuntzaren kronika bat da, eta hiri baten aurkikuntzarena, Donostia, zeinek aztarna sakon bat utzi zion. Hori 2012an gertatu zen, eta atrakzio horrek, Bizkaiko Golkoaren alde batean kokatutako leku hura hobeto ezagutzera eraman zion.

2014ean bueltatu zen, Donostia, bere jendea, gastronomía eta tradizioak hobeto ezagutzeko helburuarekin. Ikertzen eta deskubritzen jarraitu zuen. 2012ko urrian hasi zuen bide hortatik sortu da San Sebastián Chronicles.

Guk hau biltzen dugun momentuan, oraindik ez daude guztiak argitaratuak. Eskuratu daitekeen azken emanaldia euskaldunen jatorriari buruzkoa da, ibilbidearen hasiera izan zen euskaldun aterpe batetik, eta glaziario garaiaren amaieran Europako lehen kolonizatzaile batzuk. Teoria hauek, gai honi buruzko interesatuentzat, gure blogean jasotzen joan gara.

Ez dugu emanaldi guztiak argitaratzera itxaron izan nahi. Ezagutaratzera eman nahi genituen, gure irakurleek ere J.C Reid-ek argitaratzen dituen heinean ezagutzeko.

Orain, serie honen aurkezpen artikulua usten dizuegu, eta lehen lau kapituluen esteka. Sarrera osotzen joango gara, lan bikain hau ere gure blogean bildua gera dadin.

Artikuluak bildu baino lehen, J.C Reid-i hiru gauza adierazi behar dizkiogu.

Lehena xehetasun bat da. Euskaldunen askatasuna eta identitate mantentzeko borrokan, ETA ez da anekdota triste (eta odoltsu) bat baino. Zorionez, euskaldunentzat, defentsa ez da inoiz haien esku egon. Milaka emakume eta gizonen lana izan da, Giza Eskubideenganako konpromesu, errespetu eta apaltasunetik, herri hau bizirik mantentzea lortu duena.

Bigarrena, Donostia inoiz ez da “Espainiako txoko ilun” bat izan. Izenburuarekin “europako hiritxo” baten egundoko proiekzioa azpimarratu nahi dela. Baina hiri euskaldun hau, bere historian zehar, edozer gauza izan da “txoko ilun” bat izan ezik. Benetan bikaina dena, Euskal Herria bezain herrialde txiki batek historian eta munduan zehar izan duen aldaketa eta eragin gaitasuna da.

Hirugarrenez, eskerrak ematea da. Euskaldunak ezagutaratzera emateko esfortsuagatik, gure herrialdearenganako maitasunagatik eta gu garena adierazteko boluntariotzagatik. Euskaldunak Historian partaidetza bikaina izan duen herri bat gara. Baina era berean, batzuk deformatu izan duten irudi horren gainetik beretan garenaren irudia ikustarazi behar duen herri bat gara. Horretarako, J.C Reid bezalako asko behar ditugu, benetan garena kontatuko dutenak. Guk batzutan eta batzuiei buruz adierazten dugu, Euskaldunen Lagun Taldekoak kontsideratzen ditugula. Honi, talde honetan sartzen diogu.

Eskerrik asko.

The San Sebastián Chronicles

It all started in October 2012 when my wife Tamara and I visited friends at a vacation house near Ventorros de San José outside of Granada, Spain. We decided that we’d spend a few extra days in Spain after that visit was over, and we started looking for possible destinations. I’d spent quite a bit of time in the usual places like Madrid and Barcelona, so we looked at some alternate possibilities.

San Sebastián

If you’re ever in the company of well-traveled friends and want to stir up some debate, you might ask the question, “What’s the world’s greatest food city?” There will be a contingent partial to the great cities of Asia – insisting that the likes of Hong Kong, Singapore and Saigon are all worthy contenders, all excellent suggestions based on the dizzying, delicious array of street foods available in those cities.

The story of how an obscure region of southern Europe became the gastronomic capital of the world encompasses many factors: political, economic, cultural, geographic, and even genetic factors have played a part. It’s a story that spans literally thousands of years – from the prehistoric settlers to Roman conquerors; from the volatile history of Spain from the middle ages all the way through the Spanish Civil War and the haphazard creation of the nation that we know today.

One of the more curious urban rituals found throughout the world is the evening stroll. Citizens of a town or city appear in the main square or street, some dressed to the nines, slowly strolling and people-watching, exchanging gossip and participating in other activities specific to a region or culture. In Victorian England, the promenade allowed men and women of means to show off both status and fashion. The French flâneur of the 19th century embodied the image of the idle intellectual/artist, strolling the streets of Paris to chronicle the experiences of modern life.

La colonización de Gran Bretaña de los “protovascos” tras la última glaciación

The origins of the Basque people and language are in dispute. In fact, according to some conventional theories, the ancestors of the Basques are the ones who repopulated much of Western Europe after the last Ice Age.
