Askotan hitz egin dugu gaur egungo Kanadako kosta atlantikoetan mendeetan zehar euskal baleontzi eta bakailao-ontzien preseentziaz. Gehien bat presentzia hau Red Bayko euskal balentzien estazioaren hondakinetan ezagutu da, UNESCOk Gizon-Emakume guztien Ondare izendatu dituenak. Askotan aipatu izan dugun lekua.

Era berean aipatu izan ditugu gaur egungo Plazentia Kanadan dagoen euskal presentzia eta biztanle horien eta Euskaldunen Herriaren arteko biztanleen erlazioen bir-sortzeari buruz ere hitz egin izan dugu.

Gaurkoan, Inside Newfoundland and Labrador Archeology blogaren ekarpen interesgarria eta argigarria dakargu, Ipar-Amerikako kosta horretan hainbat euskal egonaldien zergatia azaltzen digu honetan.

Gainera, gure kasuan behintzat Smithsonianeko National Museum of Natural History, munduko alde hartako euskaldunen presentzia ezagutzeko aurrera eramaten ari den ikerketa ezagutzeko erabilgarria izan zaigu. Gure ohiko irakurleek dakiten bezala, instituzio honek, Smithsonianek, presentzi garrantzitsua izaten ari da gure blogean, eta ziur asko, 2016ko Smithsonian Folklife Festival jaialdiaren edizioaren ospakizunean bikoiztu egingo da. Ospakizun honetan Euskal Herria eta bere Kultura protagonista nagusia izango dira (eta nahiz eta adierazi ez, protagonista bakarra izango da).

Inside Newfoundland and Labrador Archeology blogaren artikulu bat biltzen dugu, gure ustetan bereziki nabarmentzekoa dena.

Arrazoi berdinagatik, nabarmen eta interesa, Smithsonianeko National Museum of Natural Historyk munduko parte hartan euskaldunen presentzia ezagutzeko lanari buruzko artikulu berezia dedikatuko dugu. Gune honetako jatorrizko biztanleak eta euskal baleontzien arteko erlazioak aipatzen diren beste sarrera bat ere biltzen dugu.

Other Basque sites, the Newfoundland edition

When you mention the word Basque in this Province the minds of most people go to the UNESCO Word Heritage site at Red Bay and the remains of the very well preserved 16th century Basque whaling industry represented there. People are often surprised when they learn there are more than 30 other registered Basque sites in Labrador. Basque sites are also present on the Lower North Shore of Quebec.

Saddle Island West artifacts

While writing my thesis on the Recent Indian period I had to read all the material I could find on that period of Newfoundland and Labrador’s past. That’s when I learned about the Recent Indian site on Saddle Island, Red Bay.
