The International day of the Basque Diaspora is fast approaching, and will arrive, as always on September 8th.
We, of course, have supported this event by covering it and participating in it as actively as possible. We expect to do the same again this year.
This fifth edition has two very special features.
One, quite symbolic for us, is that it is going to be held, for the first time, in the Northern Basque Country, specifically in the capital of Lower Navarre: Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port. We truly hope that some representatives of the administrative bodies that administer our divided country will attend, be they from the Basque Government, representing the Basque Autonomous Community, of the Government of Navarre, representing the Community of Navarre, or the Association of the Northern Basque Country (listed in order of creation).
We’ll be there to chronicle and participate in this event. The last time we took part in organized events was in 2019, in Ispaster. Since then, right up to this year’s event, we’ve been severely restricted by the health measures taken in response to covid-19.
And that is the second special feature of this year: again, Basques from all over the world, except those from the Far East, can celebrate without restrictions after the terrible pandemic that has kept us held back for over two years.
Tell them what you’re putting together
The Directorate for the Basque Community Abroad, part of the executive branch of the Basque Government, has asked all Basque Centers around the world to share their events calendar with them. As they do every year, they would like to put together a World Events Calendar, and they expect it to be quite powerful.
The World Events Calendar would add visibility to the Basque Diaspora, and this way, we as Basques all over the world can show off just how active we are.
So, are you going to organize anything to celebrate the Day of the Basque Diaspora, anything at all, of any type of event or format? Share it! The most important this is to create visibility for the Basque Community in the world on the day created for us to remember that wherever in the world we may be, we have a common home, and a strong connection.
