It’s been a while since we last spoke about the Guggenheim Bilbao Museum.  The last time was actually two years ago!  The reason why isn’t because no one’s speaking about the museum, but rather because all those articles that do are really only covering new exhibitions.

But today we’re coming back to this cultural institution (and key piece of Basque projection abroad in the last 25 years) to bring you an article from Google Arts & Culture.  Google Arts & Culture is a non-profit initiative that works with cultural institutions and artists around the world.  Their mission, as they say on their about us page, is  to preserve and bring the art and culture of the world online, to make it accessible to anyone, anywhere.

This topic/article, created to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the museum, brings it to us from several different viewpoints, which help us get a well-rounded idea of what the museum is and why it’s so important.  Actually, what it does is bring together a series of articles about the Guggenheim Bilbao that the Google service has written over the years.

We’re on our way to the museum’s twenty-fifth anniversary (in October 2022), when we’ll celebrate everything the museum’s opening has brought the city of Bilbao, making it a worldwide cultural, urban, and architectural role model.

We’ve always said that the Museum is simply the “cherry on top” of the urban transformation process of the Bilbao metro area.  It’s been studied in universities and is still discussed today, no doubt because the transformation is still ongoing.

But we also always say that having this museum here, in our country, has been one of the most visionary, brave, and profitable decisions in the history of Basque institutions, as was so clearly explained ten years ago in La Stampa.

The vision the world have the Basque today would be quite different, possibly smaller and worse, were it not for the museum.
