A month ago, we brought you news that the University of the Basque Country was launching a post-graduate program about the Basque Diaspora at the behest of the Directorate for the Basque Community Abroad, part of the General Secretariat of Action Abroad at the Basque Government.

This course was designed from the outset to be global and intercollegiate.  It will be offered as a “hybrid course,” online and in-person, between September 2021 and May 2022, in Spanish.

As we mentioned in the introductory entry, the program is structured into two levels, which can be completed progressively throughout the academic year.  These levels are “Expert” (the basic level) and “Specialist”, the more advanced level.

We’re convinced that creating a university specialty handling the training of experts in a field that is such an intrinsic part of our national reality is strategic, and may play a key element in the evolution of our community in the world, and at home, in the next few years, especially if it has been designed from the outset to be accessible to the whole global Basque community and all those interested in “everything Basque”, including those who do not have a college degree.

And that’s why we’re trying to make everything we consider essential clear to those who might be interested, in order to encourage them to sign up.

It’s in-person and online

It has two formats available for students: in-person and online.  Although it will be offered in physical classrooms, in-person attendance is not required.  The course organizers, aware of the interest people from all over the world might have in this, have organized it such that all the subject matter and classes can be accessed online in both courses.  This means that anyone interested in going more in-depth in the Basque Diaspora may attend, wherever they live.  All one needs to do is sign up.

There are two courses with different levels of depth

The first course, “University Expert in the Basque Diaspora“, including 18 ETCS credits, aims to teach knowledge and scientific analysis of the Basque Diaspora to professionals, members of the Basque Diaspora communities, and in general to all who wish to delve deeper into the matter.  More info can be found here (in Spanish and Basque).

The second course, “University Specialist in the Basque Diaspora“, covers everything offered in the other course, and adds a more complete and complex syllabus, with a fuller and up-to-date specialization aimed at covering the study of the Basque Diaspora from an interdisciplinary perspective, delving further on many fronts within a general context of the studies about diasporas carried out at an international level.  More info here (in Spanish and Basque).

Who can sign up?

It is absolutely necessary to highlight that absolutely no university degree is required to take this post-graduate program on the Basque Diaspora.  Anyone with a clear connection to the Diaspora, regardless of their education level, may sign up.  A good level of Spanish would be beneficial.

How much do they cost?

The two courses are surprisingly affordable for a post-graduate program.

University Expert in the Basque Diaspora: €200 to sign up

University Specialist in the Basque Diaspora: €300 to sign up

In both cases, the registration fee is the only fee that must be paid.

This competitive price is possible thanks to the support of the Directorate for the Basque Community Abroad at the Basque Government.

When is early registration?

Early registration opened May 3.

How do I sign up?

There are two ways to register:

For those without a university degree who want to take the course, the second option, emailing the program head directly, is the best way.
