The Basque film «El hoyo» ( ‘The Platform’ in English), directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia and produced by Basque films, is turning out to be a hit on Netflix, placing itself among the most watched films in most of the countries where it debuted, including the US.

It’s clear that Netflix “spotters” had a good eye when they bought the rights to this film at last fall’s Toronto International Film Festival and set a spring release date.

It would seem that the Basque cinema-Netflix pairing works.  As we’re reading about this, we also recalled the wonderful reception Errementari. El herrero y el diablo had when it joined the platform in February 2018.

Jason Bailey presents the film and gives us a few clues to understanding its success in an article in the movies section of The New York Times. Amy Nicholson also offers us her analysis in Variety.  And in El Comercio in Peru, we can find another summary of what the critics are saying about this Basque film.

‘The Platform’ Review: An Accidentally Timely Political Allegory

Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia’s horror thriller “The Platform” has been a regular fixture on Netflix’s daily Top 10 since it hit the streaming service last Friday, and no wonder: with its generous helpings of cannibalism, suicide, starvation, blood, guts and feces, how could it not be a crowd-pleaser? A gnarly mash-up of midnight movie and social commentary, the picture is overly overt but undeniably effective, delivering genre jolts and broad messaging in equal measure.
