We find ourselves once again getting to talk “around” soccer, rather than “about” it.
La Copa, a championship known as the “KO Tournament”, is where Premier League teams face off against teams from the lower divisions where in many cases, the players are amateurs.
That’s what happened today with Real Sociedad, who got to play an away match with CD Becerril, in this first phase of the tournament. The score was 0—8. That’s to be expected when an elite team is matched up with a group of players from Becerril de Campos (population 1,000) who enjoy soccer without getting to quit their day jobs.
Despite the differences between the teams, and the final score, all signs point to it having been quite a party. And that can best be seen on the Twitter account of the team from Palencia province, which we sample here, but which should be seen in its entirety.
Muchas gracias Txuri Urdines por el espectáculo de fútbol ofrecido en la segunda parte.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR PLAYERS FOR WHAT THEY ACHIEVED!!! wE’LL BE BACK!!!
A true sports fiesta, in the best sense of the word, that has made locals and visitors happy—so much so that the president of Real Sociedad, Jokin Aperribay, has decided to thank them for their hospitality with a proposal that is sure to make everybody thrilled.
The Basque team will pay for the trip, the tickets, and the meal for all the inhabitants of Becerril de Campos, as well as the teammates, who would like to come see a live match between the Basque team at the Reale Arena.
This match and this gesture seem extraordinary to us, and give us hope that there is still a feeling of sportsmanship in the world of soccer.
And we’re happy to report this isn’t the first time this Basque team has had a “special gesture”. Back in 2016, we reported how this team had decided to give a young homeless Alava man who was “living” in the stadium gates a job; a news item that was heard round the world.
We picked this story up in the Argentine edition of Marca, but we’re sure it’s being reported everywhere.
