Well, this has to be one of the more interesting ways we’ve come across a story, thanks to the worldwide “Basque network”: we received a message from a reader, who was told by an American friend of his, from Elko, who’s now living in Estonia!
The protagonist of our story is Aitor Narvaiza, who was born in Ermua, Biscay. When he was eight, the family moved to the US in search of a better life, and settled in Elko, Nevada.

The rest of the information comes to us from and article by Suzanne Featherston in the Elko Daily. Mr. Narvaiza has been a police officer for over 23 years, and he’s currently a sergeant for Elko County.
He’s a member of the Elko Basque Club, which he considers very important, as you can see on his campaign Facebook page, which lists the Elko Basque Club under “Affiliations”. Also, you can see his profile photo is in front of an ikurriña.
For those who don’t know, the office of county sheriff is usually an elected position in the US, and Aitor’s running! We wish him the best of luck.

Narvaiza running for sheriff
Aitor Narvaiza filed for election on March 12 to run for Elko County sheriff. “Why do I want to be Sheriff? I made a promise to my father before he passed away; I will work relentlessly for the citizens of Elko County to protect, serve and make them feel safe,” Narvaiza wrote in a statement.
