Last August, the Academic ranking of World Universities (ARWU) for 2017 was published, and it placed the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), the only Basque university on the list, in a “medium-low” ranking.  We discussed this with evident concern.

Today, we’ve found another ranking of universities: The 2018 Times Higher Education (THE), published by The Times.  In it, they rank the 1,000 best universities of the 20,000 that there are in the world.

On the list, we can find two Basque universities.  The University of Navarre, which is private, is to be found in the 301-400 range.  Then, the UPV/EHU, which is public, is in the 601-800 range (dropping).  Neither the Public University of Navarre, the University of Deusto, nor Mondragón University, appear on the list.

We know that these indices and rankings cannot value all the elements that give character and “weight” to an educational institution.  But that’s true for all the universities being analyzed.  And, we cannot deny, our universities do not seem to as highly ranked as they ought to be.

We believe that we need to ignore the 19,000 universities that didn’t even make the list; for us, the only references we need are in the top 1,000, and our goal should be to get our universities into the top 200.

When we saw the ranking data published in Shanghai in August, we once again wondered:

whether a small country, with no more resources than its people, education, and knowledge, could afford not being at the head of that group.

Today, seeing the what’s on the list, what’s not, and what position our universities are in according to The Times, we again ask that question.  And we sincerely conclude that we have a long road ahead to advance and improve.
