Filming Europe, the Association of European Film Commissions, has just begun organizing, for the first time in its history, an award for the best European filming location for film and television in the last ten years.

It’s an award that all Europeans can vote on, choosing one of 11 finalists, among which is San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, which was proposed by the Bilbao Bizkaia Film Commission.

Being among the eleven finalists is already a recognition in and of itself, as it’s the result of a complex nomination process.  First, the European network of film commissions had to propose and chose their places (a specific place that was used in film and television fiction), so that, from all of them, a group of film experts and critics from Cineuropa could choose the final list.

We loved reading, in the description, that this place on the Basque Coast is introduced to voters as being in its natural habitat, the Gulf of Biscay.

The timeframe for voting is from September 11 to October 15.  Among all the voters, one winner will be chosen to take a trip to the winning locale.

We’d also like to take advantage of this entry to comment that, after the fame San Juan de Gaztelugatxe has attained thanks to its appearance on Game of Thrones, the appropriate government bodies need to seriously think about the preservation of this amazing place, which is the heritage of all Basques, as well as the environment around it.

You can vote for San Juan de Gaztelugatxe here.
