This Saturday, a statue dedicated to President Lluis Companys was unveiled in the Catalunya Plaza in Buenos Aires.

Sara Pagola, the Basque Government delegate in Argentina and Mercosur took part. She spoke some words reminding the audience of the close relationship between Lehendakari Aguirre and President Companys.
It was a relationship that made Lehendakari take the decision to join and protect the President when he went into exile; a path that the Lehendakari knew well, because he’d had to go into the same exile just two years earlier when the insurgent troops led by Franco occupied the last piece of Basque lands south of the Pyrenees.
It was a relationship that reflects the one between Catalonia and the Basque Country, both of which are trying to get back their “place in the world”, and decide their own future. It was a relationship that explains why the President was, at this unveiling, wrapped in the Argentine, Catalan, and Basque flags.

Buenos Aires inaugura una estatua en homenaje a Companys
La Plaza de Catalunya de Buenos Aires tiene un nuevo inquilino. Este sábado la capital de Argentina ha homenajeado al 123º presidente de la Generalitat de Catalunya, Lluís Companys, y ha instalado una estatua suya que, a partir de ahora, presidirá la plaza que lleva el nombre del principado.
Camino del exilio: president Companys y lehendakari Agirre
Tal día como hoy del año 1939, hace 78 años, las dos máximas representaciones de los gobiernos democráticos de Catalunya y de Euskadi -el president Lluís Companys y el lehendakari Jose Antonio Agirre, acompañados por los miembros de sus respectivos gabinetes- atravesaban la frontera hispano-francesa por el paso de La Vajol (Alt Empordà) e iniciaban el camino del exilio. El día antes el ejército sublevado había ocupado Girona, la última gran ciudad catalana que había quedado bajo el control de la legalidad republicana. En La Vajol se plasmaba la derrota de la democracia, y se ponía fin al sueño de progreso y libertad que se había iniciado 8 años antes con la proclamación de la República.
Seis y media de la mañana del 15 de octubre de 1940. Foso de Santa Eulàlia del castillo de Montjuïc. Per Catalunya. Fueron las últimas palabras de Lluís Companys i Jovernota, nacido en Tarrós, Lleida, el 21 de junio de 1882, y apresado en Francia tal día como ayer, 13 de agosto, hace 75 años, antes de cumplir la pena de muerte impuesta por un consejo de guerra sumarísimo por “rebelión militar”.
