Esperamos verles pronto entren nosotros.

Things To Do In Spain: Explore Mount Urgull

When someone tells me they’re traveling to Spain and looking for recommendations; San Sebastian (Donostia, in Basque) is my first thought for city destinations in the northern part of the country. It’s charming, beautiful, and steeped with history. Mount Urgull, the hill that stands on the right side of the bay, epitomizes all those characteristics in one easy to explore package. Mount Urgull is an easy walk from anywhere along the Promenade and you can either walk up from Parte Vieja or walk around the by the aquarium and the point to see views of the Bay of Biscay. I’ll recommend that you start with the second way and on your way back down, drop right into Parte Vieja. That way you get the best of both.

Things You Should Do In Spain: Hike Atxular’s Eye

Located in Parque Natural de Gorbeia, the Itxina massif is full of features to ignite your imagination. With over 500 caves, jagged limestone cliffs and labyrinths, beech forests, and stone huts – it’s hard not to create stories of some mysterious world high in the mountains of Basque Country. In fact, one of the caves inside this limestone world is said to be one of the regular homes of the Basque goddess, Mari. To make spark your curiosity even more in terms of the history of the area, remains of a Neanderthal were found in yet another cave.

Things You Should Do In Spain: Hike the Frontier Views Walk

Beginning from the car park at Puerto de Izpegi, which sits right on the border between France and Spain, the Frontier Views Walk outlined in Lonely Planet’s Hiking in Spain book certainly lives up to its name. This 10.5 km hike wanders between open fern covered hillsides, beech forests, and high up to wind swept ridges – all the while crossing back and forth between the two countries. One of the most magical moments from our trip to Northern Spain took place on this hike – that kind of moment that I always thought only existed in other people’s photographs or the Planet Earth series.

Scenes from Spain: Bilbao’s Guggenheim

We were only in Bilbao for two nights and spent our only full day hiking the Itxina. So we only had a chance to walk around the outside of the famous Guggenheim Museum – lucky for us there was plenty to see.

A Place To Stay in San Sebastian, Spain: Hotel Codina

When I get asked for recommendations on where to go in Northern Spain, my very first answer tends to be San Sebastian. It’s a city that really has something for everyone; great shopping, some of the best pinxtos, a gorgeous stretch of beach, and plenty of history to be explored. While looking for lodging options in San Sebastian, we found a number of great self-cater apartments available for rent and lots of very upscale hotels. The apartments were only available on a weekly basis and the most of the hotels were just out of our price range. We ended up finding a good middle ground in Hotel Codina – a very nice hotel with an in-room refrigerator.
