Txoko: First Look

Txoko, the Basque-inspired small plates restaurant from Ian Begg and Ryan Maxey, opened this week in the former Enrico’s space on Broadway.  Here’s an early look from The Chronicle, which visited last night to take the menu for a test drive for Sunday’s “What’s New” print feature. Please note that this first look isn’t anything remotely resembling a review, but simply descriptive snapshots of a restaurant during its first week to give potential diners an idea of what to expect, at least in the earlygoing.

What’s New: Txoko opens in S.F.’s North Beach

Basque-style tapas have found another home at Txoko, courtesy of Naked Lunch’s Ryan Maxey and Ian Begg. The restaurant, named after Basque gastronomic societies, takes over the Enricos’s space. Txoko’s concise menu nods to Begg’s European sensibility, and currently features dishes such as wood oven-roasted squid stuffed with spinach and fermented black beans; and a foie gras torchon with Pedro Ximenez gastrique.

First Bites: Txoko Opens in North Beach

Ryan Maxey and Ian Begg, the gentlemen behind the popular North Beach lunch spot Naked Lunch, have expanded next door with this week’s opening of the Basque-inspired dinner spot Txoko (pronounced choke-oh). Opening in the shuttered Enrico’s space, Begg and Maxey have created a restaurant with a rather eclectic menu and wine/cocktail list, relying heavily on the freshest ingredients.

Basque Restaurant Txoko Is a Welcome Addition to San Francisco’s Strip-Club Heavy Broadway in North Beach

“So when did the strip clubs open on this street?” I asked a dapper elderly gentleman, his wool scarf tied ascot-style around his neck. He had just been complaining that Broadway Street wasn’t family-friendly anymore. “October, 1964,” he responded matter-of-factly. “That’s when we had to go topless just to stay in business. Bare-chested ladies everywhere!” Turns out, I was chatting with a former owner of Pierre’s Nightclub (now Hungry I), located on the infamous patch of strip clubs in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood. The interaction typified the eclectic crowd at the soft launch of Txoko (pronounced tcho-koh), the new Basque-inspired restaurant from Naked Lunch owners, Ian Begg and Ryan Maxey.
